2020: Clear Vision (A Clear Explanation of My Calling)

2020: Clear Vision
A Clear Explanation of My Calling

It’s 2020! A great time for re-visioning and re-focusing on God’s call. Check out my new vision casting letter to my fellow Pastors and Church Family.

Pastors and Church Family,

Hello! My name is Justin Canavan. I am an Assemblies of God World Missionary to Japan from Southern Missouri. (Learn more about me here).During my one year service trip to Japan in 2016, God made it clear I was called to Japan full time. Therefore, as an act of obedience, I am now part of a church planting team in Tsukuba, Japan (Japan’s “science city”). I currently serve as an Associate Pastor at a local international church, serving in youth ministry, Chi Alpha college student ministry, and media ministry.

My church Tsukuba International Christian Assembly is a thriving church. We have  about 100-130 people attending every week and new people coming all the time. 25% of attendees are Japanese, and 75% are from nations from around the world (British, Filipino, Korean, American, African, etc.). This is way above the average attendance of most churches in Japan-15!

More importantly, Japanese people are giving their lives to Christ, getting baptized, and being called into ministry. Truly, God is working, and my team foresees the need to start a second service ASAP. (See video explanation here). Moreover, we feel God calling us to plant 20 churches along the Tsukuba Express Line (a train line with 20 stops from Tsukuba to Tokyo).

The Tsukuba Express Line

In addition, <1% know Jesus in Japan; 0.3% of Japanese people are Christians; and most Christians in Japan are foreigners. Truly, Japanese people are primarily Buddhist and Shinto in practice but are atheistic in belief. Furthermore, many have never even had the opportunity to hear the Gospel message preached. They are without the Hope of Jesus, and we feel God calling us to bring that Hope to as many Japanese people as possible.

THE PLAN

Further, since Japan is very technologically advanced and media savvy, we feel media to be a great way to help communicate the Gospel message. Therefore, in addition to preaching the Word of God, my goal is to provide media resources and training for Pastors and churches throughout Japan so more people can come to know Jesus. I plan to do this by creating films, documentaries, and other media materials that will help communicate the Gospel in a way Japanese people will understand.

Finally, if you could, please prayerfully consider committing to give monthly before June 2020 (my departure goal). If you feel God is leading you to partner financially with me, you can commit to give online at canavaninjapan.com/give. Again, I so appreciate yours and your church’s prayers and support. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at justin.canavan@agmd.org, or call me at (417)306-8062.

God Bless,

Justin Canavan

Christmas in Japan & the Hope of Jesus

Christmas in Japan & the Hope of Jesus

Christmas in Japan
& the Hope of Jesus

It being Christmastime, today, we’re gonna talk about what Christmas is like in Japan and the Hope that Jesus brings to ALL PEOPLE. In Japan, during this time of year, Christmas stuff is everywhere. Further, there are Christmas songs playing everywhere, there are Christmas decorations everywhere, and people are encouraged to buy gifts. Okay? How is that different from how Americans celebrate Christmas? Well, I’m glad you asked…Watch the video below to find out about Christmas in Japan & the Hope of Jesus.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

WHAT IS GOD CALLING YOU TO DO TODAY?

If you could, help me go…

THROUGH YOUR PRAYERS

AND THROUGH YOUR MONTHLY FINANCIAL SUPPORT.

Japanese people have never had the opportunity to hear. THEY NEED TO HEAR…

I KNOW I’ve challenged you before on this, but I challenge you to ask God what He wants you to do today and then do what He says to do.

Truly, God’s been challenging me in this same area. I personally support missionaries, not from my work budget, but from my personal funds. Maybe God’s calling you to send or be sent. Be listening to what the Holy Spirit might be saying tonight, and then do whatever He says to do.

A Thanksgiving Story

My First Day in Japan

In 2016, I went to a place called Tsukuba, Japan to serve as an Associate Pastor at a local international church TICA, serving in youth ministry, college student (Chi Alpha) ministry, and media ministry.  My first day in Japan in 2016, my Missionary Mentor Chris Carter picked me up from Narita Airport in Chiba, Japan, and we started talking about this viral, famous music video called PPAP (Pen Pineapple Apple Pen). (See the video on Youtube here).

A Thanksgiving Celebration Feast in Japan?

Then, we started talking about an upcoming church outreach event Pastor Chris called, “a Thanksgiving Celebration Feast.” Wait! A Thanksgiving Appreciation Feast in Japan? How does that make sense? Well, I’m glad you asked. According to people in our church, most Japanese people have never eaten turkey. Further, since TICA is an international church where culture is often celebrated, Pastor Chris thought making a bunch of turkeys would be a great way to connect with the community. Even more, since Tsukuba is a university city, it would be even more of a draw because, when free food is mentioned to college students, ears tend to perk up.

Next, Pastor Chris and I started joking around about making a parody music video of  “PPAP.” One lyric led to another and then another, and, so, by the time we got to the church, we made up most of the lyrics to what we called “Pan Potato Turkey Pan.” See Video Below.

The Results

After we made the parody music video, we shared the video everywhere all across social media.  Then, our worship Pastor shared it on his social media, and he is a professor at a local university. Next, his students started asking about the Thanksgiving event just so they could see the performer of the parody music video–Pastor Chris!

All in all, at the event, we filled our building with tons of people who do not know Jesus. In fact, we could barely fit everyone in. God used this crazy idea to create an opportunity for us to connect with more Japanese people, and for more Japanese people to hear about the love of Jesus and His Gospel!

Even more, this is a crazy story because, in Japan, the average church only has around 15 regular attendees who are usually fairly elderly. Therefore, for us to have 110 people from all ages come to this event, and hear about Jesus, it was an incredible thing! We are so thankful for this opportunity, and we are constantly praying that God would open up more doors of opportunity such as in this story so that Japanese can hear about Jesus! Will you pray with us?

Bouncy House

BGMC (Boys & Girls Missionary Challenge) is the AG missions program for kids. Its purpose is to instill a heart of compassion to reach the lost through praying, giving, and going. All funds raised through BGMC go to meet critical needs around the world.  These needs consist of feeding programs, water wells, Bible schools, curriculum, and whatever else a missionary needs in their part of the world.

Bouncy House

In 2019, BGMC bought our team a couple bouncy houses to help us reach kids in our community, and the immediate results were astounding. Check out our testimony video below.

My Media Equipment Project

Why Buy This Equipment

Japanase culture is very technologically advanced. Further, media is very prevalent. Due to these cultural norm, I believe that film media can be a huge resource that makes cultural sense. Moreover, during my one year at Tsukuba International Christian Assembly, my team and I saw great results from using high quality media to reach out to the surrounding community. All in all, we believe this will help us more effectively reach the Never Reached of Japan with the Gospel.

What This Equipment Will Allow Me to Do

  1. First, this equipment will allow me to be a resource for the local church Tsukuba International Christian Assembly.
  2. Further, it will be useful for our church planting team as we seek to plant 20 churches along the Tsukuba Express Line. Learn more about our plans to plant churches here.
  3. Furthermore, it puts me in a position to be a resource for the Japanese Assemblies of God, Asia Pacific Media, and Assemblies of God World Missions. Through partnership, we hope to provide media resources and training for Japanese Pastors and church leaders.
  4. Finally, it will be a great tool for communicating to partners testimonies of what God is doing in Japan.
